Alternatives in Mental Health is delighted to announce some exciting developments following July 2004's successful taster day event and booklet. These are outlined below...

Website Launch

We launched our brand new website in November 2005. On it you can read about the background of our project, as well as brief descriptions of the different types of therapies available and their benefits. There are also useful contact details for local practitioners and national organisations.

We will be updating this page on a regular basis with details of our current progress, latest events and proposed plans.

Recent events

10th October marks World Mental Health Day. For 2005 we held some free therapy sessions each Monday during October at Lambeth Mind offices for the benefits of our volunteers and staff. The therapies we offered were:

  • aromatherapy/head, neck and shoulder massage by Jane Robbie
  • breathing, stretching & relaxation techniques and Polarity therapy by Zofia Hockin
  • shaitsu by Sarah Homes
  • a group session of T’ai Chi and Chi Kung by Janet Lindsey

We hope to mark World Mental Health Day in the same way next year offering therapy sessions to members of Lambeth Mind – watch out for details in Lambeth Mind News.

Thanks to all that participated and helped make these sessions happen this time around.

Research

To enable us to provide low-cost and/or free complementary therapies for mental health service users in Lambeth and Southwark, we’re planning a piece of research with results we hope will help when making future bids for funding. We are planning to work with SURE (Service User Research Enterprise) which is based at the Institute of Psychiatry (IoP) in south London and led by Dr Diana Rose who has years of experience in supervising user focused research.

We will select two different types of therapies in order to evaluate and establish their effectiveness. Sixteen mental health service users from Lambeth and Southwark will be taking part in the research which we plan to begin in 2006.

Further information about the recruitment of service users will be available in the Lambeth Mind News and Southwark Mind’s monthly newsletter. A summary of the research analysis will also be printed in these newsletters. To be put on their mailing list, contact Lambeth Mind (as above) or Southwark Mind:
